Brody and Kara have reached the age where they can read a story and then tell a story. Since Chasity and I are in charge of teaching the three year old class at church, we decided to have the kids practice telling Bible stories.
The idea behind having our kids tell the stories is to prepare them to teach our three year old class. Brody is 9 and Kara is almost 8 now so we thought this would be good practice for them.
Every night I get out the Bible story books and give all three kids one of the books. I tell them which story to read and they read it in detail, conceptualize it and then come and tell the others the story.
Some nights are awesome! It has been a great learning process for Brody and Kara as they prepare themselves to teach our class.
The other night, Kara came out to tell her story about Jesus healing the paralytic at the pool of Bethesda. She came in and started telling me how a group of men had opened up the roof and lowered a sick man down to Jesus in order for Jesus to heal him.
I looked at Kara and said, "You might want to read this story again because there is no roof in this story." She looked at me a little frustrated and then I said, "There is a pool in this story!"
Kara grabbed the book and headed back to her room to really read it this time. When she came back in, she was all smiles as she told me the correct story.
The thing I walked away with is that they really are getting to know these Bible stories to the point that I wonder if they are really reading them in great detail.
