First Day of School

During the past couple of years, I have observed Kara growing as a person and it has been fun.  She has an excellent memory and easily learns new things through rote memorization.

We thought it was best for her to be home schooled for the past couple of years because she got lost in the crowd while at school.  In fact, the teachers didn't even know that she could talk and failed to connect with her in a meaningful way.  As a result, we decided to teach her at home so we could have the one on one interaction and bring her out of her shell.

As Kara has grown over the past couple of years, it became fairly obvious to me that she wanted to go to school and connect with others.  We decided to send her to a private school this year as a result.  I can't even begin to tell you how excited she has been knowing that she was going to school.

I think it is fair to say that Kara has been dreaming of this moment for most of the summer and today finally arrived.  Since I was at work all day, I didn't get the chance to talk with her about her day until I got home.  I think I was just about as excited as her.

When I got home I asked her to tell me about her day.  She had fireworks in her eyes; however, she didn't have too much to say.  I decided to help her by asking a question, "What was your favorite part of going to school?"

She looked at me and without a blink told me, "Dad, I really love recess and lunch!"

Her answer got me thinking about how much money we were paying for her to attend school so she could eat lunch and go to recess.  Not to belabor that point, I then asked her what she enjoyed most about the classes she was in.  She thought about it for a minute and then said, "Coloring, I really enjoyed coloring a picture of a boat."

Is it any surprise that Kara likes recess, lunch and coloring?  I guess she is fairly normal but I hope she is learning some stuff in there too.
