Thunder was shaking our house around 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Kara woke up due to the heavy rains that were banging against the windows. She was seeking refuge from the wild events going on outside.
Since I was awake, I heard her open her door as she moved out into the hallway. I slowly moved out of bed and met her in the hallway.
Kara said with a quiver in her voice, “Daddy, it is thundering..”
I said, “Well, let’s go back in your room and lay down.”
Kara had some major reservations about this course of action; however, she trusted me and let me lead her to her bed.
I tucked her into her bed again and laid down on the bed next to her. I was planning to wait for her to fall asleep and then go back to bed. However, while I was waiting for her to fall asleep, I fell asleep on accident.
A few hours later, I heard a crack of thunder and a flash. The rains were hitting hard against the glass. Kara’s head popped up and fear raced through her body. She then noticed that I was laying next to her. Her little hand reached down to grab me to make sure I was there.
After she touched me, she then felt totally at peace and laid her head down again. I reached my arm across her and gave her a small hug to let her know everything was O.K. Shortly after this, she was asleep.
I thought to myself, “Even if a tornado picked up our house or lightning was to hit the house, there was nothing I could really do to protect her; however, a simple little touch making sure Daddy was near was all she needed to feel safe and secure in a dangerous world.”
I hope that will never change….
